Edward Gawler Prior, a former Premier of British Columbia, built this Tudor-style manor from 1911-1913. Through out this elegant home, there were 20 rooms, a garden level ballroom with sprung hardwood floor, a stone archway leading to the garden and ten fireplaces. Prior was later appointed Lieutenant Governor by King George V and served until his death in 1920. The architect of the house was W. Ridgway Wilson known for other large buildings in Victoria.

Notable architectural features are the extensive use of granite rock and stone terrace balustrades, large carved projecting exterior brackets, lavish use of quarter sawn white oak in the entrance halls and dining room, old growth oak and fur flooring throughout. The estate grounds have extensive English Style gardens exhibiting beautiful perennial borders.

The house has passed through 6 owners, one of which was the Norfolk House Private Girl’s School. This is the family home of the present owners since 1989 where they raised their children. The manor was restored in the early 1990’s by the current owners, retaining original fixtures and fittings throughout. The gardens have undergone extensive rebuilding and have received several awards. While staying here, you might be lucky enough to meet Susan, our resident paranormal. She is dressed in a maid's uniform of Edwardian design and she is very friendly.

The Prior House Inn, a designated heritage building, has participated in the 2002 The Land Conservancy Heritage House Tour and the 1992 Art Gallery of Victoria House Tour. This is the first and only Victoria Inn to receive both the American Automobile Association prestigious 4 Diamond Award as well as the Canada Select 5 Star Award.
